A Control Chart is a special type of run chart,

An unstable process that is statistically out of control will exhibit patterns of variation -

The DMAIC process of Lean Six Sigma is a scientific method for process improvement — similar to PDCA

What is Lean Six Sigma

 Definition of Lean Six Sigma — also known as Lean Sigma

Six Sigma is a measure of quality — representing 3.4 defects out of a million opportunities.

The Six Sigma methodology was initiated by Motorola and expounded by General Electric.
It emphasizes quantifiable, measurable statistics to select improvement projects, and to manage quality.

Lean Six Sigma (or Lean Sigma) combines continuous improvement methodologies
that use both Lean tools and Six Sigma tools.

Start with Lean

There are many published case studies and multi-implementation analyses that conclude that:

  1. A Lean initiative by itself tends to start strong, then often flames out

    After using 5S,Value Stream Mapping, and other Lean tools to pick the low-hanging fruit, management might lose interest before getting to the Lean tools and methods for establishing and enforcing Standard Work — which would have prevented the
    all-too-common backsliding into old habits

  2. A Six Sigma initiative by itself tends to never get off the ground —

    spending so much time training people and gathering data that management might lose interest before any tangible results can be produced.

  3. A combined Lean Six Sigma initiative has been repeatedly proven to yield
    the best results.

    Especially when you start by picking the low-hanging fruit with some simple Kaizen events, and then bring in the big statistical artillery at an opportune moment. (Most commonly when you get to the step on your Lean journey when you start lowering your swamps of protective inventories, which quickly begins to reveal the rocks and alligators of previously hidden quality problems. And dealing with quality problems is what Six Sigma is all about.)

So why has productivity been increasing by 5% per year since 1999, while it averaged only 1.5% for the prior 25 years?
